Mass Balances of the Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets Monitored from Space

چکیده

Abstract Satellite data have revealed that the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets are changing rapidly due to warming air ocean temperatures. Crucially, Earth Observations can now be used measure ice sheet mass balance at continental scale, which help reduce uncertainties in sheets’ past, present, future contributions global mean sea level. The launch of satellite missions dedicated polar regions led great progress towards a better assessment state sheets, which, combination with models, furthered our understanding physical processes leading changes sheets' properties. There is three-decade-long record Antarctica changes, new planned both continue this further develop observational capabilities, critical as sheets remain most uncertain component sea-level rise. In paper, we review mechanisms describe art techniques monitor Greenland’s Antarctica’s balance, providing an overview knowledge these vast remote regions.

Increasing rates of ice mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets revealed by GRACE

[1] We use monthly measurements of time-variable gravity from the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite gravity mission to determine the ice mass-loss for the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets during the period between April 2002 and February 2009. We find that during this time period the mass loss of the ice sheets is not a constant, but accelerating with time, i.e., that ...

The Dynamic Response of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets to Multiple-Century Climatic Warming

New calculations were performed to investigate the combined response of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to a range of climatic warming scenarios over the next millennium. Use was made of fully dynamic 3D thermomechanic ice sheet models, which were coupled to a two-dimensional climate model. The experiments were initialized with simulations over the last two glacial cycles to estimate the...

Accelerating ice loss from the fastest Greenland and Antarctic glaciers

[1] Ice discharge from the fastest glaciers draining the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets – Jakobshavn Isbrae (JI) and Pine Island Glacier (PIG)– continues to increase, and is now more than double that needed to balance snowfall in their catchment basins. Velocity increase probably resulted from decreased buttressing from thinning (and, for JI, breakup) of their floating ice tongues, and from...

Sea-level changes at the LGM from ice-dynamic reconstructions of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets during the glacial cycles

New experiments were performed with three-dimensional thermomechanical models of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to simulate their behaviour during the glacial cycles, to reconstruct their thickness and extent at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and to estimate their glacio-eustatic contribution to the global sea-level stand. The calculations used improved ice-dynamic and isostatic treatm...

Mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet.

The Antarctic contribution to sea-level rise has long been uncertain. While regional variability in ice dynamics has been revealed, a picture of mass changes throughout the continental ice sheet is lacking. Here, we use satellite radar altimetry to measure the elevation change of 72% of the grounded ice sheet during the period 1992-2003. Depending on the density of the snow giving rise to the o...
